The free spins
An empty grid opens the round, and you choose your god before the first spin. He then uses his Hand of God on every free spin that doesn’t win. No losing spin goes without help.
The round multiplier climbs with every new drop, and in the free spins it stops resetting between spins. It can reach 20x. God-symbol wins still fill the meter, and a full meter adds 4 spins with Hades, 3 with Poseidon and 2 with Zeus. The round stops at 20.
A grid cleared during a free spin pays 100x your total bet on the spot. Hades starts with the fewest spins and adds the most, and Zeus does the opposite. The choice trades spins now for spins later.
Outside the free spins the same meter has 3 sections. A god-symbol win of 3 fills 1 section, a win of 4 fills 2 and a win of 5 fills all 3, with wilds counted in. Once the wins stop, the Wrath of Olympus begins, a free round in which all 3 brothers act in turn. The order never changes.
The Hand of God
Play’n GO’s story starts after a victory. Zeus, Poseidon and Hades have beaten Cronus, their father, along with the other Titans, and the skies, the sea and the underworld are split among the 3. All of them stand on a rock in a rough sea on the opening screen, under a purple dusk sky.
Poseidon holds a gold trident and wears a spiked gold crown with blue and silver armour. Zeus stands in the middle with white hair, a laurel wreath and his arms folded. Hades wears a black hooded cloak and carries a dark staff with an orange glow at the tip.
The faces of the 3 are the top symbols, and any mix of them pays. The lower symbols belong to them too, a helmet for Hades, a trident for Poseidon and a bolt for Zeus, with a gold lyre as the fourth. The active god stands to the right of the grid, and in Play’n GO’s own picture of the base game it’s Hades, against red rock and lava.
On a spin that doesn’t win, the active god may step in with his Hand of God. Hades changes one set of symbols into a different symbol, Poseidon puts 1 or 2 extra wilds in play and Zeus wipes out 2 sets. The brothers earn their place on this grid.
In Take Olympus by Betsoft a new god takes over the reels every 10 spins at random, and Zeus is the wild. The Betsoft game pays on 50 lines at 95.49% and tops out at 2,328x. Here the free spins let you pick.
The drops
Now, every row and every column counts. A win needs 3 matching symbols or more, side by side in a row or a column, and one symbol can count towards several wins. The winning symbols clear away, everything above falls into the gaps, and every fresh drop raises that spin’s round multiplier. When a 3-symbol win is cleared, a wild coin lands in its middle spot.
The multiplier panel at the top left starts each base game spin at 1x. Wilds left alone on the grid are removed too. An empty grid is the way into the free spins.
The five versions
Now, Play’n GO lists 5 versions of Rise of Olympus, at 96.50%, 94.51%, 91.49%, 87.50% and 84.50%, and its rules sheet names the 96% one as the default. Look the figure up in the game’s rules before you play.
The volatility rating is 6 out of 10 on Play’n GO’s scale, and the game page puts it in words as medium. A win can reach 5,000x the stake, so the $0.20 minimum can win $1,000 and the $100 top stake $500,000. The game came out on 22 August 2018.
The lucky god
On the slot floor I knew a regular who raised his stake only when his favourite character showed on the screen. He called it his “lucky” face. Nothing I said moved him.
Rise of Olympus invites the same habit, with a god beside the grid on every spin. The rules print one percentage per version for the whole game, not one per god. The god on show only decides which help a losing spin might get. The stake scales a win, not its odds.
The score
Score: 8.0 out of 10. Zeus, Poseidon and Hades work for their place in the base game, the Wrath and the free spins, and that’s worth 0.5. The 96.50% at the top of the list adds 0.5, and so does the multiplier that keeps climbing to 20x in the free spins. The 5,000x cap adds nothing.
